( There's only one thing Shanks' wants from Uta, on his birthday, and that's just to hear her voice, just to talk to her, so he calls her. If she doesn't want to speak to him, she doesn't have to, though. He'll go to voice, he'll give her peace and respect whatever she needs. )

Hey, Uta. How are you holding up lately? Have you met any new friends? I hope the hotel is treating you right. You can tell me if it isn't.

Shanks! I have! And it’s been fine. The hotel has been kind enough I suppose, all things considering.

(Its been relatively nice lately, despite the ups and downs.)

[ He's silent for a second, not having expected Uta to remember - Shanks is touched. There's a soft sigh. ]

Ah, have you met more people? Have you spoken with Luffy yet?

Of course! I never forgot, you know.

I have! I’ve been talking to Yu and Makoto. Yu is still new but he’s really kind.

And Loki is always so sweet!

(There’s a pause, silence before her voice softens.)

I have not. I have been… trying with Nami though.

I shouldn't doubt you.

Good to know you're making friends. ( He does pause, though. Loki? If they're doing more than just talking, he doesn't want to know. Same for Nami. )

Nami and Loki are good people. I think they'll be good for you, too.

You really should know better than to do so by now.

(She teases lightly. Which is anger cry from where they started.)

I know. I just… I really don’t know how to approach Luffy. Every time I think about it I just… panic? Worry he’ll hate me for it? I hurt him quite a bit.

You're right. ( Shanks sounds his usual jovial, carefree self, until the next part. Then he goes a bit more serious. )

Uta...remember when we spoke? About how you're from my future. Chances are, what happened hasn't happened to Luffy yet, either.

And if you want to prevent making the same mistake, you need to take responsibility. Part of that is facing him, no matter what. Isn't it?

I don’t know if that makes it worse or better.

(She groans, and while he can’t see it, she’s running her fingers through her hair. It was easier to think about the events if they had already happened to Luffy, but if they haven’t… that could be problematic.

Or easy. She doesn’t know.)

I know I have to face him, it’s just… what do I even say? What will he do when he knows? I know what he did when it all went down but… (She sighs heavily.)

I’ll figure it out. I know I need to talk to him eventually.

Try saying to him exactly what you said to me. Start with that, then when he speaks, you'll have something to respond to.

Just talk to him and let him handle things for himself.

( Because...Shanks is pretty sure the longer she takes, the harder it will get. )
